Assignment:

Create a detailed illustrated and lettered map of a medium sized city of your choosing that you have not been to. Illustrated maps combine many core illustration skills: distillation and presentation of information, visual hierarchy, cultural reference, architectural reference, figurative reference, botanical reference, transportation reference, lettering, combined to create a system of visual hierarchy. Conduct research online on your city and include points of importance and interest on the map, including labels, where important.

  • Historically a Gold Rush city, then after the Gold Rush it became a destination for healing and rejuvenation because of the mineral springs.

  • Hosts the Emma Crawford Coffin Race each October - commemorates when Emma Crawford’s coffin was unearthed by flooding on Red Mountain and came racing down the mountain and into town.

  • Numerous historical buildings in town.

  • Known for outdoor recreational areas nearby and the mineral springs throughout town.
